• 2005 AES Show Recap

This year’s AES show was one of the most successful for Cakewalk. The show floor was abuzz with the news of SONAR 5, Dimension Pro and Project5 version 2 and demos were packed. Below are some of the highlights from the show.

    SONAR 5 Launch Party

    SONAR 5 Launch Party
To celebrate the release of SONAR 5, Intel sponsored a party at AES held in the Cakewalk booth at the end of day one. Cakewalk customers, members of the press, producers, engineers, and friends in the industry all attended. It was so well attended that we needed to spill out into the aisles of the show floor.

Ron Kuper Delivers Seminar on Benefits of 64-bit Computing for Digital Audio Applications
Cakewalk CTO Ron Kuper's, Intel sponsored seminar on the benefits of 64-bit computing was delivered to a standing room only audience. In his talk, Ron discussed the benefits of the x64 platform for audio applications, the superior nature of mixing with SONAR’s 64-bit double precision audio engine (on 32-bt or 64-bit machines), and the process of porting applications to the x64 platform.

Ron’s seminar in total was over 45 minutes in length. We will be posting the seminar, broken out into different sections. For our first installment, we have excerpted the section specifically on the benefits of SONAR’s double precision mix engine:

Rory Kaplan Speaks About SONAR 5 and Surround Mixing
Rory Kaplan has had a long career as a technology leader as a musician, tech, producer, and A&R representative. Through his career he has worked with such greats as Michael Jackson, Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock, Stevie Wonder, Queen and many others. In addition, Rory was instrumental in the launch and adoption of the DTS format and had produced or executive produced over 180 surround recordings.

    Terry Howard

Terry Howard Wins 2005 Tec Award
Cakewalk’s Ron Kuper and Carl Jacobson attended the awards ceremony show, and sat with Terry Howard, Les Paul, and Gibson CEO Henry Juszkiewicz. As it turns out, Henry loves SONAR and uses it regularly to produce his recordings. He’s been using Cakewalk products since 1989 and is a regular visitor to the forums.

The highlight of the evening was when SONAR user Terry Howard (pictured with Les Paul) won a Tec Award for Creative Achievement in the category of Record Production/Album for his work on Ray Charles Genius Loves Company.

Congratulations Peter Johnson, Winner of Boxx Giveaway
Cakewalk, in conjunction with Boxx gave away a high end workstation PC at the end of the show. The winner was Peter Johnson, of Brooklyn, New York. Peter reported to us that he is the music supervisor and composer for CSI New York. He also is using SONAR to score an upcoming film on the life of Ike Turner entitled the King of Rhythm.

Peter, was very excited at the news “I’ve been a SONAR user for years and this is unbelievable, with this new dual-core Boxx system and SONAR 5, I can finally upgrade to 64-bit. My productions are going to be better than ever!”
